Dive site description: Les Davis is a great place for divers with less than 50 dives under their belt. It combines all the novice activities in one location. The sidewalk gets within 10 feet of the water then you have a small climb down some concrete blocks to the actual waters edge. Climb down can be difficult if not in shape or use to wearing heavy gear. You will want to swim or walk the shallows back to the area in front of the parking lot. Then just head "out to sea" within in 30-45 feet the bottom drops out. At a depth of around 40 feet you can start finding your first signs of pier wreckage (an old concrete pier now lies broken and submerged). Examine all the nooks and crannies (this is a large pier) the hollow concrete will hide lots of Wolf eels that will hand feed, and the deeper wreckage (65-70 feet) will hide a few octopus. This place is great for the beginner. Lots to explore. Now the dislikes: If you get to close to the fishing pier it is just loaded with discarded fishing lines. You are sure to get snagged. General advice is not to go any farther than the submerged tires. The other major problem with this site is that it is located in the Port of Tacoma and if you hesitate on taking a shower or washing your gear after words YOU WILL STINK!!! I don't know how polluted that water is but it wreaks when it dries on your gear. |
