Dive site description:
Nice site, used alot for open water classes. Totally protected in an estuary behind Whalen Island so the vis was between 6 and 10 feet. The downside is, there's not much there. Crabs, not alot,,, We spent 5 minutes looking at a rockfish about 14 inches long living in side a tire... An old man of the sea that let me get my mask within a foot of his face, then slowly reaching for him, allowed me to touch him briefly before he swam away, looking like the oldest grouchiest man.. a few rockfish, starfish and bottles and stuff.. The dive master at Scuba outfitters in Salem recommended it to me as an acceptable site in this stormy weather. He said that Newport would be soup and the chances of vis better here. With our lights we had a great time. No current but a little tidal pull... I dove with my 14 year old Son and a friend that got certified a few weeks ago. He got tired of listening to me enthuse about it so got certified. He's hooked. Bought ALL his gear already. I'm still renting and acquiring slowly.. Ok.. enough.. Dive between the parking lot and the bridge on the south side, the north side is a little more murky but a bit deeper at 40 feet if you can find the hole we found out in the middle.. It drops off quick and both sides of the bridge are easy easy entries, Step out of your car and into the water.. On the South side of the bridge theres a couple of logs and a plie of tires roped together with the majority of the life living under the logs and tires. There is supposed to be a sunken boat there but we didnt find it. Still... All in all a great, easy dive, (Which is exactly what we needed because I was like a mother hen checking my 2 buddies with my own limited experience..
Directions:
Whalen Island is north of Pacific city about 7 miles. To get there go to Pacific city, over the bridge to Sandlake rd. Go over the little headland, then north 4 or 5 miles. Look sharp to your left because the road over the slough comes up fast.. If youve gone to the store youve gone too far.. Go over the bridge there and you cant miss the Parking lot.
