Dive site description: Edmonds Oil Dock is located a couple of miles south of the Underwater Park. It is a T-shaped dock that used to be be used to unload oil shipments. It is no longer used, but is a nice place to dive.
The main problem with this site is the long surface swim. The picture at right doesn't really show how long it is, as it was taken from in the water, at least half way out to the end of the dock. Make sure dives are made during slack periods here. Check Seattle times, and adjust for Edmonds.
The end of the dock lies in about 40 to 50 fsw, and the pilings are covered with white and some orange anemone, clams, tubeworms, starfish and other life. Swimming in between the pilings is like being in a forrest surrounded by trees, as there are so many pilings and fairly close together. Look for crabs and some fish here. I've heard this is also a good spot to find stubby squid, though I haven't seen any there yet.
Notes: Just after high tide, the current actually helps you back to shore, backward to what it would seem. I would assume that just after low tide, it would be just the opposite, so be warned about diving late at low tide. |
