Dive site description: We headed over to Harper's Pier, across the sound from Blake Island, in search of a wreck Mark had seen there before. We missed the wreck on the way out, but saw a couple of ratfish and several alabaster nudibranchs. The bottom was flat and looked like a green salad bowl with all the seaweed. On the way back, we found the wreck. It was pretty decayed, but the main hull was recognizable as a boat, probably a tug. The hull was covered by anemone and small crustateans, and many fish surrounded it. At one moment, I saw a half dozen small rust-red perch, three large seaperch and two or three rockfish, as a huge school of tiny pipefish hovered like a living cloud above us. We found a weight pocket on the bottom, so I attached my lift bag to it. I only wanted to add enough air to make it close to weightless so I could carry it with me, but my reg free-flowed and overfilled the lift-bag, shooting it and the weight pocket to the surface. We finished our dive, but never did find the bag and weight again. Oh well, time to make another lift bag I guess. After the dive, as we were leaving the dive site, we saw a seal watch us go. Too bad it hadn't joined us for the dive |
