Dive site description: This was a club dive, with around 15 to 20 divers showing up. I buddied up with Clyde, and we headed out to see what the lake had to offer. We were quickly impressed with how clear the water was. We'd heard about the incredible visibility here, but still it is a surprise when you first put your mask in the water and see so far. Unfortunately there wasn't really that much to see. The bottom in the shallows is a grassy area with a few tiny creatures, like trout fry and little white shrimp-looking things, and a few water insects. In the deeper sections, the bottom is flat, grey ash from an underwater vent. The water coming out of the vent is cold, and clear. We never made it to the vent, but others did and thought it was cool. We did find a little boat on the bottom, pretty decomposed, but a nice break from the barren floor. On the way back, we found a large fallen tree that was pretty interesting to look at, covered with aquatic moss-like growth. As we passed the dock, we actually saw a school of small trout, maybe 25 fish, probably four or five inches at most. |
