December 31, 2002 For New Years celebration, we spent the evening with Jon and Glenda's family and a couple of their friends. We made fondue, fuzzy navels, and played Pictionary and Yahtzee until midnight. We spent the night at their house.

December 25, 2002 Merry Christmas! On Christmas morning, we opened our presents, then spent a lazy morning relaxing and watching new DVDs, then went to see the second Lord of the Rings movie, The Two Towers. Christmas evening, we dropped by my parent's house, where my brother and sister and their families were hanging out.

December 24, 2002 We finished some last minute wrapping on Christmas Eve, and made some ornaments out of clay. Later, we had a nice Christmas Eve party at Glenda and Jon's house with the Kraemer families.

December 19, 2002 I just completed a week long class for Red Hat Certified Engineer training. It was one of the most intensive weeks I've ever had, but I learned a ton of good material.

November 11, 2002 Now that I've gotten pretty comforable with the PHP programming language, I decided to start learning another language called Perl. If I come up with any fun applications, I'll post them.

October 22, 2002 After work today, I got to ride my boss's Segway. If you don't know what that is, it is an experimental vehicle that looks like something from the Jetsons. It has one wheel on each side, like a hand truck. You stand on it, and can buzz around on it pretty quickly. It is surprisingly stable, though it looks like you'd just fall over.

October 19, 2002 I've rebuilt most of my web page now, after my big server meltdown. From now on, I'll be prepared! First of all, I now have two web servers set up, so if one dies, I can just change a setting and my web page will then be served up from the other server. Also I'm backing up all my data to multiple locations. Getting everything to work was not easy, as I upgraded my servers to RedHat 8.0, and parts of the web server run differently. All in all, though, I really like RedHat 8.0. It looks really nice, with anti-aliased fonts now, and the menus have been reorganized to make a lot more sense. Way to go RedHat!

September 28, 2002 I did a stupid thing and ran a disk utility on my web server that I shouldn't have, which destroyed it. I did have the website backed up, unfortunately all my data was lost from the database, like my guestbook, dive site reviews, and Corey's messageboard. :(

August 24, 2002 My sister Kim came over and we created a web page for her business, Huckleberry Creek Italian Greyhounds. Corey was a huge help, scanning in and touching up most of the pictures on the page.

August 19, 2002 Blake now has a Snake-Cam on his web site, which is a camera positioned in his Python Monty's cage.

August 16, 2002 I just finished setting up our new web cam! I'll probably leave it running most of the time, in our computer room where we often hang out. Soon we will likely put up a "Snake Cam" in Blake's snake cage. Won't that be fun! :)

August 11, 2002 The spring cleaning bug hit us a bit late this year, but now we're cleaning like crazy. We started with the boys' rooms, cleaned them top to bottom and painted them. We'll just keep working our way through the house until it's spotless. Other news: I just put together our 7th computer (we're geeks, I know). All the computers are running Folding@Home program, a screensaver program that runs in the background, doing calculations for a master computer at Stanford University that is coordinating a study of genes, to eventually find cures for all sorts of diseases.

August 7, 2002 Corey and I have been doing a lot of programming and web page stuff. He's got the basics of HTML down pretty well, having built his own web page. Now he's just starting to learn some Flash and JavaScript, and he just received a copy of Flash for Dummies in the mail last weekend. We're both running Linux now, which is really enjoyable to work with, and is fast, stable and powerful. My main computer at work is also a Linux machine, which has been up without a reboot for 106 days and counting (not bad for a workstation!). I have been learning some more advanced PHP and MySQL database, and have built several projects such as my scuba dive site review database, my guestbook, upload page (sorry, password required!) and Corey's Messageboard. I'm also writing an online shopping cart for my company's website.

July 21, 2002 Becky and I took Corey and his friend to see Cirque du Soleil in downtown Portland. The show was called Dralion, and featured chinese acrobats, clowns, an awesome juggler, and some high-flying entertainment. Expensive, but memorable.

June 29 - July 6, 2002 Happy Independence Day! My family joined my friends Clyde and Gretchen for a week of camping at Lopez Island, one of the San Juan Islands in northern Washington. The weather was terrific, and Clyde and I got in several dives. We took a few bike rides around the island, greeted by friendly waves from most of the residents. The island was teeming with wildlife, including hundreds of rabbits, several deer, a few bald eagles right over our campsite, snakes, huge beetles that buzzed us at night, and much more. The kids built a fort in the sand, and we ate some great food cooked in Gretchen's dutch oven.

May 1, 2002 I finally got around to writing a new Guestbook for my web site, and it works quite well. I hope you stop by and sign it, if you haven't already. It is written in the PHP programming language, and stores all the information in a MySQL database. What an amazingly powerful and flexible combination this has turned out to be; combined with Linux, they make a much faster, secure and stable web server than anything Micro$oft spews out. Not bad for being free. Way to go Open Source! :)

April 27, 2002 We're all excited because today we bought a brand new mini-van! We did tons of research and came to the conclusion that the Kia Sedona was by far the best choice in our price range. It's got every imaginable feature, including all-around anti-lock brakes, sunroof, leather bucket seats all around, alloy wheels, air conditioning, a V6, 10 year warranty, and the best safety feature of any minivan on the market.

April 20, 2002 A kitty from the neighborhood adopted us as her family, coming in through the doggy door and staying inside with us all the time. Blake named her Mittens. We took her in to get spayed and her round of vaccinations, and now she's all healed up. She's a very sweet little cat, constantly trying to trip us by rubbing against our legs every time we try to walk down the hall.

March 28, 2002 We went camping at Fort Stevens with Jon and Glenda and family, and stayed in a YURT. This was a very enjoyable vacation, with lots of bicycle riding, reading, fishing and roasting marshmallows. We explored the abandoned military equipment, like the old gun fixtures at Battery Russell. At night a couple of raccoons visited us, eating any dog food that Cosmo didn't eat.

February 22, 2002 It's been a week of injuries around here! First off, Blake was skating with his friend Colton. Colton fell down and broke his forearm pretty badly and spend the evening in the hospital. A couple days later, I fell hard off my unicycle and hurt my right hand, either sprained pretty badly or possibly cracked a bone. Two days later, Blake fell off his bicycle, and broke his arm! He's wearing a splint, and will probably get a cast next week. Maybe this weekend, we'll just stay safely inside and rent some movies! :)

February 14, 2002 Happy Valentine's Day! Tonight Corey and I installed Linux on his computer! Soon I think we'll be kissing Microsoft goodbye (and good riddance). I'm still enjoying Linux on my desktop and one of my servers and have no plans to go back to Windows. I've been learning a lot of new things lately, and right now I'm learning PHP and MySQL so I can make dynamic web pages that do what I want. My first usable program is my Upload script, which you can use to send me a file with your browser (you'll need to get a password from me before you can upload though).

January 27, 2002 It snowed six inches at our house last night, so we all went outside and played in it. Becky and Blake made a snowman, while Corey, our neighbor Colton and I built an igloo that was big enough to fit three kids inside.
